Hello - I was raised on a farm where we had chickens, beef cattle (does 2 a year count as "cattle"?), show horses, pigs and room to roam.
Now I am a housewife in cracker-box suburbia. The great thing is that our city allows chickens! So I got 2 to start (the two ladies you see in my profile pic) and we get 2 eggs a day (Barred Rock and Austrolop aka Bossy-Pants and The Black One).
I lovingly refer to them as my feathered pigs. I have a compost can on our counter, and we are now throwing most of it out to the girls.
They love it of course! I am eagerly awaiting my chicks for this spring, and the abundance of eggs and selling them to the neighbors. My daughter wants to put up "mug shots" under our sign...Fresh Eggs Courtesy of: (pictures of ladies below the sign)
What I am really excited about is when my kids graduate from school next year and we get to move to a larger piece of property where I can have two coops. One coop for eggs and the second for brooders (with a rooster). We are going to have goats too.
What has been interesting about this whole thing, is trying to spend as little money as possible on various things, like a coop. When we first got the girls, we went completely red-neck and their "coop" was a dog-loo I got at a garage sale for $10 and the dog run on the side of our house that we are renting. Once we realized that chickens were for us, I found a coop on Craigslist from people getting out of chickens and they were happy to just get rid of it. FOR FREE! If I would just take it off their hands. So being the "helper" that I am...I took it.
As for their run...we usher them through the house on occasion and let them run in the back yard. I am also getting ready to put up fencing around my front yard to enlarge their area. I have the metal poles you need a pounder for, so that I can take them with us when we move.
That's it for now. So I guess technically we have "front yard chickens." I hope that won't be an issue here on Back Yard Chickens.
