So Big R has pullets but they can't guaranty gender or breed of the chicks. If I go that route how can I tell the gender or breed on them, because I live in the city limits and I can't have a rooster. I thought to be 100% sure of what I was getting was to drive up to Denver to a chicken hatchery. What are you thoughts Big R or chicken hatchery?? Help and thank you...

Your Big R has a problem with the employees or management.

Any ag or feed stores around here that sell chicks, have them in separate pens with the breed name over each pen. This includes Big R.

Don't be too upset that they can't sex them for you. They are usually every-day normal people and wouldn't know how to.

It would work out better if you could find a place to buy chicks that are older... old enough to be able to tell the pullets from the roosters. 2 or 3 months old maybe.

There must be someone in your area who hatches chicks. Check out craigslist.

If breed doesn't matter you can buy black red or black sex links - if Big R carries those. These come from certain crosses where the males will be one color and the females another. This way they can be sexed very young. The sex links are great egg producers, if that is what you want.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join to our flock. I would suggest going with a hatchery, and if you want to be guaranteed to have no cockerels (most hatcheries only guarantee 90%), I would order Black Sex Links (Black Stars). Not only are they hardy and friendly, egg laying machines, but they can be sexed by color at hatching (males have a white spot on top of their heads, females lack the white spot), so you will be guaranteed all females. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your pullets.

So looking at a near by Hatchery up in Denver, there online order for 3 pullets around $63 plus Vaccination:Marek's Disease. I have looked on Craigslist but no shots for the chicks. I contacted them asking if I can come up there to buy instead of them shipping them out to me. It will take them about two business days to contact me. Hopefully good news......even though my boyfriend is supporting me he does get the glazed eye look at me when I talk about chickens. So I guess I will wait the two days to hear back from the hatchery....
