Hi Guys

Im a South African looking to start breeding for my fly tying table. I have a good knowledge of genetics and breeding, chicken management etc but as for fly tying i need some help. Can anyone link me to a south african who is doing this?

Great site, keen to get involved

Hi Matt, welcome to BYC. I'm in SA too, but I'm afraid I can't think of anyone local off the top my head now, except one member in the US, @birdman55 . He included some info and pics of using pheasant feathers for fly tying in this article:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...-golden-pheasant-pic-heavy-with-mutation-pics (it's near the end of the article).

I'm sure he'd be happy to chat with you about it.

Hi Sumi

Many thanks for the reply mate. I want to get my Mrs into a hobby and she loves chickens and i love genetics and fly tying thus why not breed our own. Iv contacted the poultry club of SA to see if they know of anyone with some genetics for us to start with. Im also looking for SA guys on the site, there is a Morgan Smit, im gona contact him and maybe if we have enough guys we can pitch in and get some eggs/genetics from overseas. Just an idea.

Many thanks to your response i think its a crime we have NO genetics or breeders in SA conidering the amount of fly tyers we have in SA. Oh well ill keep you posted.

kindest regards

Matt

I have a friend that do flyfishing and I provide him with hackle feathers and he is as far as I know happy with the feathers that I gave him.
What type of breed are you interested in for the feathers?
Where are you located?
I am in KZN

Roosterhavoc is a member on this site that has beautiful roosters that he uses for tying. He may be a good source fof info for you. I doubt that importing stock is an option. Of course, I know nothing about your financial abilities; but, importation is an expensive, very involved endeavor.
