Hello all I have had the itch to raise my own chickens for the last couple of years I have a llittle over three acers to work with and can't decide which breed to start with. I am going to use a chicken tractor and have narrowed it down to four baseded on dual purpose : buff orpingtons, light brahmas, black australorps and silver laced wyandottes. Not sure which breed to go with for chicken tractor and also around my very young daughter. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance and sorry for any typos.
 
Buff orps and Black Australorps are sociable birds , I think Brahmas are heavy birds and meatier. But all are dual purpose breeds. I know really know anything about Wyandottes.

Australorps and Orpingtons I know are friendly breeds. I don't know how they'd fare in a tractor set-up, you'd have to chat with the breed experts. Here are some threads on your chosen breeds where you can ask for advice/opinions:

Why not try a mixed flock and get a few of each breed? It's fun to see the differences in feathering, color of eggs, personalities, etc.

Glad to have you join! Feel free to make yourself at home! Why not get a little of each? I've had/have all of those breeds (except for Brahmas) and I LOVE them!

I would definitely recommend buff orps. They are friendly, meaty, great layers and cold hardy.
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join to our flock. I've had all four of those breeds and they are all great breeds, but my personal favorite on your list are Black Australorps. I've raised them for years, and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers on your list.
