EcoGlow 20 is only warm to the touch

To anyone that has one, is this normal? It seems like if the chicks need it 95 degrees that the unit being warm to the touch wont work and I'm wondering if I have a broken unit. I put my digital thermostat under it (ground level) and it's reading 67 when the room temp is 62 so it's doing something just not that much.
 
I worried my Ecoglow 20 wouldn't be warm enough for our 3 newly hatched bantam chicks, but it's been great. For the first week I put a lid under it that they like to crawl on top of so they'd be closer to the heat plate. Our chicks are 3 weeks old now and they're very happy and healthy and still like to crawl under "mom" (the Ecoglow) and sleep quietly through the night. Try putting your thermometer on a inch+ tall lid or chunk of 2x4 and see what it reads, and give it a couple hrs to warm up.
 
you cannot use a digital thermometer with the ecoglow plate. You have to use a thermometer that you can set under the plate and leave it there to measure the heat.

I checked with digital and it said 70, I laid a thermometer with mercury in it (you can by a cheap one at a grocery store that you use for meat temps, it starts measuring temps at 75 and up) and it read 100! I had to move the plate higher and away from the wall because it was too hot. I could also tell it was too hot when they were sleeping half in and half out of the plate.

Now that I adjusted the placement they love it

It uses radiant heat like a hen would warm them so digital one wont work
 
Last March I used the EcoGrow for my 6 one day old chicks, they loved it, I didn't have any problem with it. This Spring I am using the bigger one because I am getting 14 chicks. I know it says the small unit is good for 20 chicks, I just don't know how because they grow so fast and are so very active after few days. The small unit was barely big enough for my six girls.
I also wonder about the heat but then my husband explained to me how radiant heat works. I think you are good to go and don't worry about your chicks not being warm enough.
 
I'm using the EcoGlow 20 for the first time with my current batch of chicks, and I love it! They've been under it from day one, and now at 5 weeks I have it on the tallest setting. They still sleep part way under it, but spend most of their waking time wandering around the brooder and perching on top of the EcoGlow. The peace of mind that I'm not going to set the house on fire with a heat lamp is huge for me. However, I will say, since they are in my garage, the digital thermometer has been helpful to know the ambient temperature of the garage, since the EcoGlow is recommended for ambient temps higher than 50 degrees.
