I'm still trying to decide what breed will do best in the San Fernando Valley, CA. It can get in the 100's for a couple of weeks in the summer here.

I saw this site when I was on the Mother Earth site, so I thought I'd take a look. So much information -- I'm very excited!

well since you don't get a winter..lol....jus about any chickens will do except cochins or other very feathery breeds. Rhode islands, barred rocks, and all the great layers should be fine...make sure they have plenty of shade and access to water and food in the shade. Im in NM so I know what you mean by heat..lol..

I'm glad you joined us.

Most breeds should do fine in your climate, with adequate shade and water. However, you may want to ask around on the California state thread to see what any nearby neighbors might be keeping: California-Southern

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I would recommend Black Australorps. I raised them when I lived in the Corning, CA area where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (sometimes more), and when my other dual purpose breeds were listless, panting, and holding their wings out, my Black Australorps went about their usual business like troopers. In addition, they are calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
