At which age Sussex hens would go broody?

We have a few Light Sussex pullets that are 3 months old. We are hoping they'll start laying in a couple of months.

I am wondering if they'll go broody this year?

Would they be good mothers as first-time broodies?

No birds go broody before they start laying, and few do until they are adults. There is really no way to say if your birds will ever go broody, or how good they will be at it. If they come from a hen that went broody, and who was a good mother, the chance of both is higher.

Right. Broodiness has been somewhat bred out, as broody hens don't lay, and productivity has been selected for more than broodiness. Since eggs are mostly incubator hatched there is often not any reason to select for good maternal charactoristics. Still, hens of about any breed can go broody, and some do with annoying frequency.
