We just hatched barnyard mix eggs (to learn how before we get into expensive eggs). The rooster is a Barred Rock, and the hens are Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons. We have some of both kinds' eggs in this batch, but I didn't keep track of who hatched from which egg.

What would a Rock male x Orpington female cross look like at hatch? What could they grow up to look like?

The barred Rock male over buff Orp hen is going to give all barred chicks. They'll be mostly black barred with some gold leakage as they age. They'll be a little heavier than the pure Rocks when they mature.

The white legs of an Orp are often dominant, but I'm not sure if that's 100 percent over the yellow of the Rock or not. But any chick with white legs would be from the Orp momma.

I never did get any pictures of mine, sadly. But they sure turned out beautiful. The roosters were pretty funky looking as babies, but grew up to be streaked gold and silver all over. GORGEOUS. The hens weren't quite as colorful, if I recall correctly.

I haven't got a picture but am trying to decide who the hen was who contributed the egg for 2 chicks, one male and one female. The Father Roo is Barred Rock.. I do have barred rock hens and Buff Orpington hens as well as one Australorp and 2 mixed breeds. A barred Rock hen hatched and raised the chicks but the chicks are now 22 weeks old and look different. The young hen has a whitish speckled head, barred rest of her body and white feet. The young roo has long pointy off white neck feathers , black tail feathers and barred feathers in his mid section with white feet. he also has golden specks throughout his neck and mid section. From what you say it seems my 2 chicks are Barred Rock /Orpington
