Hello all, we are headed to buy lumber today for building our coop. The plans I bought don't specify treated wood or untreated. The lowes guy kept asking which one we wanted and said if it's untreated we will need to put a sealer on. Just looking for a quick answer before we spend our money today! Thanks!

Most people refer to pressure treated lumber as treated. I believe this is what is being discussed here. Pressure treated lumber is primarily used where the wood will contact the ground. So legs and runners and posts and the like are better treated as to slowing the rot process.

I don't think you need all treated lumber for sure. Only where it contacts the ground.

Staining and sealing or painting wood is a good idea to help preserve it.

Hope this helps.

Yes use treated wood for anything that touches the ground. Anything else it does not matter.
Depends on what climate you're in. In the damp hot humid South, what would last a decade in California is nothing but sawdust after a couple years...

Thanks! We live in Florida. The plans call for cement blocks so not much on ground. We ended up deciding not to buy today and picked up some pallets to see what we can salvage.

If you have the time pallet wood can be very attractive.

Here are a couple of projects I have used pallet wood with.

My husband is using this project as an excuse to buy every tool under the sun for woodworking. We bought a planer to give the pallets a nice fresh look.
