My buff Orpington is about a year old, she normally lays 5 eggs a week, yet only has laid 2 this week. She has been in the nest most of the day but with no egg. She has been eating normally. I have already lost several hens to egg bound. I'm nervous. I'm hoping she's just broody. Any ideas?

You mention you have already lost several hens to egg bound so you may already know some of the symptoms:
*Straining
*Walking kind of penguin-like
*General look of being uncomfortable/unwell
*Distress

The two eggs she has laid, were they close together and then she stopped laying or were they spread apart by a few days?

Is she sitting on eggs or just an empty nest?
One way I can tell if my gals are broody is to put an egg in front of her while she is on the nest, if she proceeds to push it under her, she is broody

No I don't have a rooster. She laid Monday and Wednesday and they were normal size. She has been on an empty roost. I'll push an egg in front of her and see. Thanks y'all!

Some times my hens just stop laying or slow down for no reason at all, if I was a chicken, I would slow down every once in a while, it must be hard laying eggs every day! Whenever that happens, I just give them a treat like a few pieces of lettuce and let them be, and after a week there fine.

When mine are broody and I pick them up and move them to a new spot or outside, they hold the weird flatish position they were in on the nest, sometimes they push their breast down and hold the tail up for a few moments, then they snap out of it. And they make funny noises, like 'chuck chuck chuck' low in their throats. I don't know if she would do that if egg bound. But I don't really have a whole lot of experience
