Will eating wet newspaper cause harm?

We have 6 Khaki-Campbell ducks ,they are about 2 weeks old at the moment. each evening we take them out of the pen and give them a dish of water on some newspapers to play in for awhile, my daughters having an issue that they eat some of the wet paper, I think that as with most thing that go in the front end that, "this to shall pass". She worries that this will become stuck in their craw so to speak.
Which is the correct out come anyone?

I think there is a risk that if the duckling eats too much of it, she could become impacted.

Depends on how much she swallows, how big the chunks are, if she's getting any chick grit, and pure happenstance.

How about an old towel on top of the newspaper?

Can you use an old towel or blanket instead??? You could simply hang it outside to dry during the day till the next evening
 
Isnt newspaper printed with soy ink, if its compostable, as long as they have grit, it shouldn't, but I never used newspaper for mine, it would be too uncomfortable and isnt very absorbant, I always used large flake pine shavings from Tractor supply, bc you can stir it up and get more use out of it. Its also alot easier to clean than paper ( blue ink hands) and straw ( seeds and bits everywhere forget vacuuming straw :))
My chicks are on paper with straw on top and what amess and they are lliterally eating the paper.
Time for them to go out with the duckies who are using straw in their coop now for nesting.
