Hi,

I just bought a pair of brown quail, a male and female, about 7-8 weeks old.

Tonight I discovered that the hen is indeed egg-bound. As far as I can tell, she's got 1 or 2 stuck eggs.

Never had an eggbound quail before. She's eating and drinking fine, but she sits in the corner with her feathers fluffed up. It doesn't look well, and warm water had no effect. I'm getting quite nervous at this point.

Any advice?

(I'll try to get a picture as soon as I locate my camera.)

Thanks.

It's 2:00am and I'm half asleep at this point. Hopefully she'll make it through the night and I'll try again in the morning.

You need to get her soaking in some warm water. The longer she goes like this, the less likely she will survive.

Soak her lower half in warm water for about 10 to 15 mins. Not hot, but not luke warm either. The warmth of the water will help her to relax her abdomen and get the egg to pass. Try putting some JY-Jelly or Vaseline on her vent and around the egg. This can help her slide it out.

If she doesn't pass the egg, you will need to poke a tiny hole in the egg and get a syringe without a needle, suck the contents out of the egg, gently collapse the egg and then reach in with your pinky and gently drag the shell out.

Keep us posted!

She seems fine now, got the egg out this morning. She's back with the other quail, and seems perfectly happy now. But I'll keep a close eye on her, thank you.

Make sure there is no competition for drinking water. Dehydration can be the number one big cause of egg binding along with not enough calcium. So keep some ground oyster shell around for the hens as well.

I glad she got that egg out! :)
