Hello everyone! My husband and I have been talking about venturing into the world of Chickens for about a year now. Found out we would be moving to SC (from GA) so decided to wait. We just put a contract in on a house in Prosperity, SC (Newberry County) and am having trouble finding info on whether or not we CAN have chickens. I found the info for many surrounding cities. Our new home is on 2.84 acres, outside city limits, on Lake Murray. Next door neighbors are on 3.7acres each and all other lots in the area are 1.5 and bigger lots. There is no longer any HOA... went defunct in 1990 and no one has chosen to resurrect it. Does anyone know anything about this area?

Looking forward to doing some learning before we take the plunge, IF we can take the plunge.

Welcome to BYC. You can contact either the city or county zoning departments and ask, but I'd try doing it online first, for example; "animal/livestock ordinances." Check both the city and county. Good luck.

I'm glad you joined our community.

Dawg53 has given you some good advice.

Thank you everyone. I am having horrible luck finding ANYTHING for this city or county on the subject.

I used the same verbiage dawg53 proffered and thought I was getting closer. But man this county does not make it easy. I can go through the minutes of meetings basically and hope I see the right topic. It is crazy. I was able to find the info easy peasy in surrounding areas!

Here's a Prosperity, SC newspaper article from last year that mentions something about a chicken ordinance. Funny how they let horses walk on sidewalks and of course people are complaining about the horses pooping on sidewalks...sheesh.

Darn you're good dawg!! At least that is progress. It mentions CHICKENS, and that #s are LIMITED. That is IN Prosperity. Our address is Prosperity but we are outside city limits with a few acres. I am guessing I will be golden for at least 'getting started'. Every ordinance I've read in surrounding cities mentions 4 hens, no rooster. I could at least get started with that and grow from there, and then if someone complains... take it down to 4... THANK YOU! I will still keep looking for the actual ORDINANCE. lol

Since you'll be in the county, I'm sure you'll be good to go with chickens. Now it all depends on zoning. You can call the realtor or owner and ask what the zoning is for the property and ask if chickens and other animals are allowed. Let them do the work for you lol. Good luck.
