We have 1200 square ft. fenced in for our chickens. The area is in a field. My husband really wants the area to stay grass. How many chickens do you think we could put in there and accomplish that?

I think you will find this thread interesting:

They will turn the area in front of their coop to dirt in no time. The will eat a LOT of grass,, regardless of how much feed you offer. Part of the answer depends on the type of grass and the fertility of your soil. I recently read that clump growing grasses stand up to chickens better than the more spread out, single plant types, but I've also read that even that depends on the specific variety.

The 87 sq ft per bird (see link) is intended to represent feeding the birds on forage only, but as much grass as they eat, it probably also represents at least a guesstimate on how much laland will stay grassy with chickens foraging.
