A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

It's amazing how quickly birds can decimate a compost pile. Mine was about 5' tall and 5'X8' The turkeys found it first followed, of course, by the chickens. They spread it flat, turned it, tilled it, and added more fertilizer... So I opened the area to the hogs so they could deep till it. Gonna plan corn and sunflowers there in the spring.

Does anyone remember who wrote the article on how to save eggs longer than 14 days to hatch? I need to hatch more hollands, but will need to save eggs longer...
It is in the Hatching Eggs 101 by @Sally Sunshine

It is under the storing hatching eggs section. As I recall she stores them pointy side up in and egg carton that is place in a plastic bag. There is no turning of the eggs and I believe that she stores them in a cooler.

I have stored turkey eggs big side up in egg cartons with one end of the carton tilted up and alternating ends 3 times daily in a cool basement for up to 21 days and have not noticed a big drop in hatchability.

Good luck.

Maybe i should have paul scoop it into another pile on the edge of my garden. :). I just dont want them to be goin IN my garden. But i truly was suprised when i saw them runnin like a bunch of nuts through it today and not payin any mind to all the goodies they passed along the way. It was kinda comical lol. All they had eyes for was the pile. That pile really is ready and could go in the garden now... i was just waitin for fall to do a top cover til spring..... watch in three days the pile will be gone and the monsters will be attackin my garden. Eesh!

Those are great suggestions Aurora. Hey...aren't you supposed to be hauling like 100 birds to a swap this morning??

I dragged about 40 birds to the swap this morning and unloaded about 12 :/ Not terrible but not as good as I'd hoped. I have a lot of turkey poults to find homes for and since it's the end of the season, I think I'm going to have to have a major sale.

I took some poult photos this evening.

What a bummer to have to bring so many back home!

Did you have to pay for a vendor spot at the swap? I've considered going to one, but I don't know what the "rules" are.

Yooper, here is my professional lapper, Daisy. Hops in my lap & takes a nap. Comes in handy on cold days. On hot days we require a fan.

Omg how cute! I have 13 6 week olds that follow me everywhere but no lap turkeys yet. I was worried about getting attached but hubby tells me hes still doing well. I'm so shocked by it. Still worried I'm going to loose him but maybe it'll turn out okay!

The silver snake is still sitting tight on her nest.... lol
I did realize that it would be best for her to have a safe location to take her poults if she manages to hatch any so we got to work today

we replaced the temporary dog blind with a more permanent one.
And put up a wall to divide the run into two sections the far one is 12 foot wide by 10 feet deep. I plan to move the silver snakes dog hutch into the small section when we get the door hung. I think that it will be plenty of room for mama and babies till they are big enough to be introduced to the rest

Finnie, those pics are adorable! What a gang!
Alicia...the pens look cool. I'm sure the Silver Snake is going to appreciate all the work! I'm hoping they hatch!
Yooper...good news about the baby. Is the wound healing? Scabbing over or anything?

We've been hit by a cold front. It's been only in the high 80's! I can really tell a difference in the birds. They've really perked up. The excessive heat was really wearing on them. It won't last long, but the break is welcome relief! It's been so bad I even suspended training with my hound pup. So he's been back in boot camp the last two days. We are working on self control. Lordy he's a handful! The only thing I've got going for me is that I'm more stubborn than he is....I think he's finally figuring that out!
One of my turkeys layed an egg in one of the wading pools...what the heck is that about?
