A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

SS are the only birds allowed in my garage. They spend hours foraging for any bug they can get their beaks on.

Saw my poults chasing some little moth. Almost hurt myself laughing. Daisy & I were sitting on the deck. We were both enjoying the show! Daisy is funny....I see her teaching the poults stuff. When I come out she wanders over to hang out, but she keeps a close eye on them. If they are doing something she deems inappropriate or stupid, she will get involved. As she hoaves to her feet, I can see her shaking her head & rolling her eyes as she heads out to attend to the babies. Once she gets the situation under control, she'll hop back into my lap.

Speaking of SS. They ignore the poults unless they think they've found something to eat. Both poults were trying out one of Daisy's dust craters. The SS descend upon them & took over the crater. Both poults ended up standing there with puzzled looks on their faces. Poor guys! The SS play them!

SS are my favorite chickens. Ralphie has them too. Cool birds. Uber friendly. Great foragers. Everyone should have turkeys & SS! And maybe a coonhound....LOL!

I've only ever had 1 SS and she was a hand-me-down from the neighbors when they got out of chickens. She was 5 years old when I got her and I had her for a year or so before I found her a home to retire at. She was the sweetest little lady. She had never free ranged before and all of her toes were twisted but she fell right in to the routine here and was so sweet. I accidentally hatched one of her eggs once lol. I had no idea that old girl was still dropping an egg now and then. I couldn't figure out why this one chick looked so cool and different. I figured it out eventually, AFTER I sold the chick. I never got a chance to tell the lady that bought her what she was.

Right now, I have to say that my favorite chickens are English orpingtons. Not the buffs from the hatcheries, but the well bred, blue black splash. They are such amazingly BIG and friendly things!

This big guy is Titan. He's the obvious leader of the flock. He keeps everyone in line and is a gentle but strict leader. His son, Hercules, is just about as big as him already and he just hatched in like December.

This is one of his little boys. I'm sorry for the butt picture but I needed the one with a turkey in the background lol. He hatched in LATE May and is so big for his age! I found a pet home for him. The people absolutely adore him and he has a collection of his own little pullets :)

I also have a thing for my Polish pair but that's a totally different story... They're not like normal Polish lol

Didn't know you had Orps. Titan is amazing! I opted for the bred down Australian version...Australorps. They are cool birds too! But the SS is still my favorite. They don't lay a huge egg, probably med/large, but my old girl layed till she was almost 9.
And I love my turkeys BEST!

Lol, yeah, they're not A NORMAL breed but mine are even more not normal. I've heard that they're supposed to be a crazy, skittish, and spazzy (is that a word?) Breed. My Polish cockerel just wants held and cuddled and listens for the back garage door to open. Once he hears it he'll come running from wherever he is in the yard as fast as possible to jump in the feed buckets lol. Nigel and Pneuma have a morning routine and every day they have to come get a snuggle and a special handful of good, just for them. They're such goofy birds!
