Yesterday two of my dogs got out and chased and killed my neighbors free range chickens. Our neighbor shot and killed our dogs. We are offering to reimburse our neighbor for the chickens at $40 per chicken plus the cost to buy new chicks. Is this fair?

Probably more than fair if his birds were nothing special (not to be cruel). I am sorry about your dogs.

That's very reasonable of you. I'm sorry your dog's were killed. I would defend my flock against a dog also and if my dogs were shot in defense of livestock I would feel responsible to replace the birds also but most people are not logical or responsible like you're being. I commend you for being such a great neighbor.

I'm so sorry that you had experienced such a traumatic event. I have both dogs and a flock that I love. I would freak if someone shot my dogs! I would be upset if my birds were attacked, but birds I can replace. You are more than fair to pay $40. Personally, for shooting the dogs I would say you are more than even.

I'm sorry that you lost 2 of your dogs in this manner, however, your neighbor was justified in his/her actions in defense of his livestock/animals. I don't know where you are, but here in Colorado, a person also has the right to defend his animals in the same manner, and I would not hesitate to do exactly what your neighbor did. The fact that you are being a "stand up' type person and offering to pay for the damages done & replace his flock is extraordinary in today's day and age. I think your offer is actually more than generous considering you suffered a loss as well, granted that your loss was your own fault.

Sorry that this has to be your first post here on BYC.

What a tough situation! I'm sorry you have to go through it. I think you are being more than fair to your neighbor. I can understand how it happened, and stray dogs killing my chickens probably wouldn't leave here alive, either. Nor would my dog come home from the neighbor's in a similar situation. It's the way it is. But still, to lose two dogs that way... I feel so badly for you.

I just want to add that I admire you for stepping up and doing the right thing by your neighbor. Not everyone is that responsible. I am a firm believer in trying to keep good relations with the neighbors.

Your neighbor needs to invest money in fencing. Neighbor was lucky to be present with firearm when your dogs attacked. Very lucky. Interesting you are first time poster with such a story.

Unfair to the dogs. Responsible ownership of animals is about the fairest situation all the way around. Don't get any more animals until your fencing and gates are adequate.
