Do you put shavings in the tray of the coop as well as the laying box or do you just put it in the laying boxes? We have 6 chickens and only 2 laying boxes is this enough? Thanks

I have wood shavings and straw combination in nest boxes, Play Sand and/or shavings on the coop floor for easy cleaning. Your nests boxes should be sufficient, hens will share nests. I got 7 nest for 10 layers but they only use 4, which 2 get most use.

If you only use pine shavings is 2 inches deep enough for the laying boxes?

I have a bottom layer of straw, which stays put and creates a cushion, and then over that I have pine shavings that go halfway up the height of the box (or maybe a bit lower). That way, they have somehting comfy under them but are not sitting up too high in the box. They will rearrange the shavings a bit; replenish occasionally.

My cousins and I built this for my hens, I was maybe thinking this could hold up to maybe 4 silkie hens? It is about 3-4 feet wide and 4 feet long. How many hens do you think it could hold?

4 is a good number. Is that the run underneath it? If so, I'd give them more space than that for the run. They love to scratch for things and the best diet for a chicken is a natural one of grasses, weeds, and bugs.
