Learning how to use roost

I put a roost in with mine from the time I got them. It took them a little bit to be able to use it but mine are 7 weeks old and 12 of the 15 sleep on the roost. The other three make me nuts and sleep under the others. Some times they need a little clean up from getting pooped on. I used to set my chicks on the roost and they learned how to balance on it and started sleeping one them almost immediately. They have a new roost now because they out grew their small one.

Would 4 weeks be to early to put a roost in for them to just climb on for practice and balance I put a ladder in today and my dark brahma who I believe is about a week older than the rest climbed to the top and hung out for awhile but it took up to much space and the others wouldn't go on it so I took it out for now. I also have a ramp I am trying to get them to use any ideas? Thanks

You could build them a little A fame with three bars just for practice. It's ok if you don't leave it in all the time yet.

Well I learned why my chicks weren't interested in roosting. I have silkies and wasn't aware that most silkies don't roost. I did put a 4" high roost that they can climb on if they want

They are doing great. Went and checked on them and they had all learned to climb on the "roost" it spans the full width of the coop and it was either go under or over haha but they copy my dark brahma who is a little older and I'm pretty sure he will be sleeping on the roost tonight

I am completely unaware of roosting being bad for them at a young age? My girls are four weeks old and they hang out on the roost bar all the time durning the day to nap a bit but they sleep under the ecoglow at night still. I think the bar in the coop is rounded edged bars that are just shy if 2 inches in diameter. I figure if they will figure it out. I did for sure block the nesting boxes off
