Hey there,

I have noticed the last week that my hens are eating a few of their eggs. I have caught one particular hen a couple of times. I have tried putting soap in an eggshell and leaving it for them and they took one peck and wouldn't go near it. My flock get crushed up eggshells and oyster shells on a regular basis and lay very healthy eggs. We are just coming into good weather now to let them out into their run so could it be that they're just bored? I am hoping tomorrow that they are out in their run they will leave their eggs alone!

Thanks for the Reply. They eat a crumb mix from the country store here that is balanced specially for laying hens. We also try and give them fruits and veggies to add in to their diet

Give them some kibble and bits sized dry dog food. Make sure that it has beef or meat byproducts in it. A little Calf Manna every second day also does a chicken good. Fish byproducts or shrimp meal is also good. Too much however could give your eggs a fishy flavor.

I narrowed it down to two hens that may have been pecking eggs so I put them alone today. One laid an egg out of sight and while they were distracted I put the egg where they would notice it. A few minutes later one started pecking it so I took her and put in the barn to see if the other one would touch it. After an hour she still had no interest in it so I put her back in my coop with the other hens. Is there a way to get the other one to stop pecking eggs?

Update:

Curtains seem to be working. I removed the one for almost a full day that I caught pecking an egg, she spent the day alone in an isolated coop. After I put her back in they did their pecking order business and she has seemed to stopped pecking eggs. I had 8 eggs in their nests today and not one touched. which is great! they are also going out in their run now because the weather has been getting better so I think they were pecking out of boredom as well! here's to hoping Ive solved the egg eating issue!!
