This is a rough drawing of the boxes I plan to build this weekend. The grey areas are the extra parts that can be used as bracing for corners if needed. The holes are to insert a wooden dowel as a perch. If you make the long cuts first the rest of the cuts will be easier. I'm thinking of flipping it horizontally. My first coop build, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I figured this correctly they should be 12" wide by 18" deep and tall. The first drawing yields boxes 12"w x 14"d. The goal was to get as many boxes from a single 4x8 sheet of material as possible with minimal waste. This will give you sides for 14 boxes from one sheet:

The dashed lines are cut lines.

Boxes are now installed. I reduced the number of boxes to five to allow more room in each one.

So..... it's been a year. How do they like and use them? Are you happy with the results? What size did they end up being?

I'm almost to this point in my build. Very curious ..... I like the way they look.

Our boxes look to be the same design, except ours have a hinged "lid" that can be lifted for better cleaning access and allow a little extra privacy for the hens. Hens love them! Very cozy.
