Can anyone help me figure out what happened to my first chick? He hatch 6 days before all the others and seemed perfectly healthy. Then when i checked on the chicks after the first night with all the chicks together my forst chick (Ocline) was dead. His butt was not wet, no signs of picking to death, maybe they sat on him? Here are a few pics of him.

could be one of many things . it hatched before the others by a few days so heat might be a factor. feed as well no pasty butt . so it could be something internal it was unassisted so it was healthy enough to hatch. it could have eaten something in the shavings . I see the chick thermometer . so your right on there . but sometimes they seem to die for no reason. I'm sure there is always a reason but sometimes you just don't know what that reason is. large producers expect losses and hatch in large numbers to off set those losses 100 % hatches are hard to get . no one is willing to say more than a fifty % hatch on shipped eggs 80 % on your own eggs gathered on the farm. and this is if your good and lucky. you are learning the down side of hatching . sorry for your loss I know you work hard at your hatches . are there any more coming or have they all hatched ? super busy today treating flocks and cleaning coops will be back on line latter in the afternoon good luck with the rest .

Sorry you lost your chick. He looked big and healthy, but in the photos it's hard to see his feet and legs well. If a chick gets dehydrated, the toes and foot will look bony, not plump and round. That would mean he wasn't drinking. Also check his throat and crop to see if he was swallowing shavings, that can cause death from impaction, starvation or dehydration.

Thanks for your help guys, I think it may have been dehytdration/starvation, because I never saw him eat/drink even though I showed him multiple times. I have 3 eggs that could still hathc (none have pip) and 11 chicks, if any more pass away I will for sure be doing some investigation. R.I.P: Ocline

That happens sometimes. It's not all that rare that a chick will have a digestive developmental issue and simply cannot eat or drink, therefore they die. If you set new eggs after that one had been incubating for a few days, or if had been partially incubated, then cooled, then put in with the others, the timing may have been right to cause an issue that you couldn't even see.
