Red heat lamp bulb replacement question

Do I need to replace my red heat lamp bulb if the color wears off? I am not sure any of the red is actually still there. The chicks are much undaunted by it, so I don't know if it matters.

The red color is supposed to help prevent pecking. I know it helps disguise red or pink spots that would otherwise attract the birds and start them pecking.
Personally, I use a ceramic heat bulb in my brooder (only gives off infrared heat, not red light)

and a separate CFL bulb for light during the day. In the evening I partially cover the CFL fixture so it's almost dark and doesn't disturb their sleep.

Is that more energy efficient? Does it fit in the same lamp? Do they need light at night?

I've seen them anywhere from 40W to 250W. If you only want heat and not light, they are probably more efficient (because the electricity is only making heat, not heat and visible light). I'm using a 150W and it is more than enough for a small (roughly 2'x3') brooder. I wish I'd bought a 100W.
They have a standard light bulb base and work well in a brooder lamp fixture.
They should have a little light at night just so they can see when they need to move around to eat or drink, but not so much that it disturbs their sleep.
Some people will say to use the red heat lamp because it provides both heat and red light (to prevent pecking), but you'll have to decide that for yourself. I haven't had any pecking issues using white light.

Thank you for all that info! I have a 250w bulb and the chickens rarely go under its light anymore. My brooder is 4'X4', but I think a 100w bulb would be fine at this point.
