We have a new flock just two weeks old in a brood cage. They all seemed to be thriving but we just found a dead bird.
Three days ago, I had to change their feed from the organic turkey starter to local gamebird feed. The new feed is 30%protein.
I noticed some maroon stools in the cage and thought it was the change in feed. Since this bird died, I'm seeing a lot of maroon stool all throughout the cage.

Is maroon stool common in some feeds or change in feeds? Could all this stool been from this bird? Could all the birds have something and this is the first fatality if the flock is not treated?

Anybody know what could have happened?

Thanks for your help!

I should also mention, the dead bird looks very healthy, no noticeable problems and his butt does not have red stool on it at all.

I gave them a DE bath yesterday while we cleaned their cage although they didn't really know what to do so they just sat their instead of rolling in it. Could it have gotten in it's lungs??

Very possible if all you had was DE for their bath. I mix a very small amount of DE with regular dirt or play sand. Pure DE is a little scary, I can't stand the way my hand feels after using it in the cages.

Wish I would have know!

We've only lost one so far. I'm not sure if that was the problem or not but I'm hoping whatever it was, it doesn't affect any of the other birds.
