I have a silkie and a showgirl who went broody together and hatched out six chicks between them a week ago. A couple days ago I found a dying chick who had been a late hatch, I figured that she crawled out from under momma and got too cold. There were no physical signs of sickness, she just was really cold. My husband and I took her inside and warmed her up, but she died in my hands a few hours later. Tonight I found another dead chick but this one clearly died of pasty butt. We removed the other four chicks and three of them had pasty butt as well. We cleaned them up and put them in our brooder with some white silkie day olds I had gotten recently. They are okay now, pooped as soon as they got cleaned up. The largest chick was a crossbreed of silkie who had no signs of pasty butt so I left him/her with the mommas.
Has anyone else had problem with momma raised chicks getting pasty butt? They had lots of chick feed and plenty of probiotic water. But it's been fluctuating between insanely hot and cold with tons of storms and high humidity. Their pen is inside of a raised rubbermaid coop so no flooding whatsoever, no water can get to them. But it is still really humid. Oh and they are purebred silkies.
