There is no point to this thread except that I thought it was a little comical. I have 3 week old Buff Orps and 2 week old Black Sex-Linked chicks. I went out to the garage to check on them and as I am walking out the door to the garage I see one of them (Fluffy) fly out! It startled me. The I am looking in the brooder and I notice that there is another one missing! The white Leg Horn (who is 3 weeks and I am raising for my neighbor) Pearl is missing. I walk around the brooder and she is laying there next to the box. She was fine, but I don't know how long she had been out. Then the great chicken chase ensued. OMG, I knew they flied, but I was shocked at the level of ease they had getting over the brooder wall! I threw an old sliding door screen over them and my husband is making a lid tonight or tomorrow.

How long before I can put them in a coop? I live in Northern CA (SF Bay Area) and it was 85 degrees today. Probably above average temp, but we have decent weather most the year.

That's hilarious.
:)
We had some hoppers early on like that and found that a fireplace screen works well as a cover on their brooder. It was in the garage and we were glad to have something to keep them safely contained.

I had some last year that would fly out, roam around and poop on everything, then fly back into the box to eat, drink and go to sleep. The evidence was there when I got home from work, but the chicks were all in the brooder! I put a thin towel over the box and that kept them in until I moved them out to the coop.

If it's getting up to 85 degrees during the day, they could probably go out in a week or two. You want them to pretty much have most of their feathers so they can regulate their body temperature effectively.

My sexlinks are the only ones who attempt adventures

I have 3, and there was always one perched on top of the 50 gallon tote I was using as a brooder starting at maybe a week old

I built them a new brooder after that with more height
it's about 24"tall and I found one perched on the chickEn wire yesterday

I bought these from TSC April 2
I put my hand next to her and another one flew up off the floor of the brooder onto my arm

these guys are going to give me a run for my money!

85 is plenty warm for them to be without additional heat during the day, but they may need heat at night for another week or two if it gets below 60.

You certainly can go ahead and move them to the coop, with heat at night as long as you have a place to plug it in.

The chicks definitely need more space. That's why they were staging jail breaks.
