Hi all :frow I have got a bonsai tree today and I'm looking for any tips on caring for it. Have done a little reading up on them and it says it all depends on what kind of tree you have. The tag on it didn't say what kind it was. Have read varying things on how to care for it as in sun and how often to water.
Any tips or advice would be very much appreciated. Thankyou.

Oh how cool!! I had one once and I had to do a lot of reading up on how to trim them. It really is an art to get it right. And of course once you cut, you can't sew the branch back on!!

I hope someone will chime in here soon and give you some tips!! :)

Thankyou @TwoCrows Yes that's what I had read about not too much water maybe once a week when the soil looks like it is drying out. I have watered it today as soon as I got home with it as it was bone dry. I gave it a little trim too as it had some very wild and long sprigs coming off it. I'm not too sure how old it is but the trunk has some pretty big branches that have been sawn off already. I got it from the garden centre for £15 GBP bargain I thought. I find them fascinating things to look at.

I will certainly look twice and cut once :gig Sewing is not one of my strong points. Ha Ha :lau

Hi @Yorkshire coop , I had to come over here to see your bonsai. Too fun! How's it doing, were you able to find out what it is?

Hi there @NorthFLChick Well I have not killed it yet so that's a start!! House plants are really not one of my strong points. I still have not found out what species it is yet but it does not too much sun I k or that much for sure. I had it in my kitchen window where the sun is quite strong and it dried out too quickly just during one day. We are having quite good weather at the moment (for England) and it was too much. Have moved it now into the utility out of the sun but still bright in there and it seems much happier it's got lots of new sprouts and is certainly growing well. The cutting of it is scary :barnie I'm trying not to go too wild on it incase I make a mistake and it looks awful, having the scissors in your hand makes you seem to want to cut even more!! It really is a more a long haul project and anything you cut now could effect how it grows in the future.

I pulled my little bonsai book out to freshen up on them. The title is "101 Essential Tips Bonsai", a small book but lots of info.

@Yorkshire coop , does your plant have sort of a silvery underside to the leaves? If so, it may be an "Elaeagnus", also known as silverberry or oleaster. (Could be way off base, hard to tell from the photos.) The below photo is one from Wikipedia:

According to my book, those have to be watered every day during the growing season and fed every 2 weeks in summer.

I'm just guessing here, take a look and see what you think.
