Chickens freaked at dusk :-(

I think they were frightened over the hole thing, because today I opened the pop door & they will not go out, they are all laying right in front of the door but will not go out. What am I doing wrong?

You did nothing wrong. Chickens don't like change for one thing and last night they had a less than pleasant expirence getting caught in the dark. Chickens can't see at night. It's ok that they are not going out readily. It's a big noisy world outside the coop. Eventually, the sun and the grass will get the best of their curiosity and they will start going out a little at a time. Suddenly, they'll think "hey, this is great" and will be eager to go out every day.

Thanks so much! I was thinking something along that line, after all they are only a month and a week old & it is pretty windy today, so hopefully soon the conditions will be right for them

I'm happy to report that I put solar lights around the perimeter of the coop yard and framed 2 windows with hardware cloth instead of glass for the coop and my girls went in to roost this evening with no issues :) I think it was a combination of it being wayto dark in tthe coop and it being their first time that freaked them out yesterday. So glad they did good tonight.

Yayyy! I'm glad this worked for you! Mine were in by dusk too, but they really weren't out much throughout the day, it was too windy & chilly.

Funny! The hens are a little vain, they don't like their feathers blown the wrong way and all messy (just like a cat) The Roosters usually could care less about that.
