Clipping wings?

I feel like for the past two weeks whenever I bring up chickens people are like "well are you going to clip their wings?" My immediate response is "no" because it seems a bit pointless to me. They can't fly away? They're big chickens and from what I know, even small chickens aren't capable of true flight. But I haven't had chickens for long. Am I missing something? Is it important for me to do this?

Chickens aren't capable of the sort of flight we associate with migrating birds, etc but they are quite capable of short flight and can clear some fairly high obstacles (fences). Clipping in chickens isn't done to prevent them from taking off and soaring into the great blue yonder, but to prevent them from going over the barriers that are being used to keep them where you want them. How important it is or isn't for *your* flock to be clipped will depend on the setup you will be keeping them in and the surrounding area - if, for example, they will be wandering in a backyard that has a standard privacy fence and the other side of that fence is likely to have dogs on it, keeping them from going up and over would be fairly important.

Ah, ok! Thank you very much. I've got no issues there. My dogs are all bird friendly and we live quite a ways from anyone else.
