When it is very cold, they work fine. I think the problem is that the thermostat is too close to the elements when it isn't cold enough to really lower the thermostat, the thermostat and heating element are on the bottom of the bowl. The element comes on and heats up the thermostat, then shuts off and the water on the top of the bowl freezes. On the buckets, the thermostat is also on the bottom, but the elements are around the side of the bucket. The element comes on and the thermostat isn't heated until the water convects and mixes, then the temp of the entire bucket is warmed.
