I have two broody hens who have managed to hatch 3 chicks out of 7 eggs. All seems fine, they make great tag team mothers. The three chicks were doing just fine when I checked them this afternoon. I went back out to check on them and one of the little chicks was laying in the middle of the coop away from the broodies on its side, still soft but not alive. Is it normal for a chick to be found dead outside of the nest?

Sorry you lost one of your littles. It would probably be very hard to tell what killed the chick if is seemed perfectly normal earlier in the day, but some kind of trauma seems likely. A chick that was sick enough to die would surely look different - less able to keep up with it's mothers, and perhaps standing around without activity. Have you noticed any diarhea, or chicks that don't seem normally active?

All the other birds seem just fine! Jumping all over the hens and running around. I just don't know why he was so far away from everyone else!

A momma could have accidentally stepped on it wrong. It happens sometimes- 2 weeks ago I had a broody jump down from the roost and land on her chick. Her chicks were a week old and I had no clue what happened until I saw her almost take out another chick getting down!
