To Grit or not to Grit?

So, we have a range of ages, 1 week to 5 week old littles. They are on our porch in brooders at night but for the past 2 weeks we've been taking them outside for day trips to an enclosure under our trampoline. We are still in the process of building their coop and run.

Do I need to give them grit if they are pecking at the weeds? Or are they OK with the little bits of dirt and things? They don't get any other scraps, just the chick food and weeds rom the yard.

Thanks!

thanks! that's what I thought. I'll check out the smaller grit.

I agree they are getting enough grit from their time on the ground under the trampoline. I feel however that mixing it with their feed is unnecessary. Forcing more grit into them then they need. A dish on the side so they can get it when they need it is in MHO better. Grit is not used up with each meal and expelled. It takes awhile for the grit to ground down to the size where it is passed out of the gizzard.

I only worry about grit in the winter as the ground is frozen and they can't get their own. What gritless birds do is consume more feed as they can't break food down enough to get all the nutrients from it as they can with grit. I don't buy it rather get it from the driveway and put in shed to use over winter.
