Hi everyone,

We adopted an abandoned feral chick on Easter. It appears to be about a month old now. We noticed that it has an air bubble on it's right side, where it's wing attaches to it's body. It doesn't appear to be in any discomfort- eats, drinks normally and is very energetic - except when we press in on it. I've read on here that some people will aspirate an air pocket, some allow it to reabsorb. If we were to allow it to reabsorb, about how long would that take? We can see a lot of blood vessels in the area and don't want to risk puncturing one.

TIA

Welcome to BYC. Could you be describing the crop on the upper right chest, where the food and water are stored? If it is a leaking air sac from an injury, I would leave it alone unless the chick is in distress. I treated one with a large leak and who was also clicking when breathing, with a 22 gauge needle jst puncturing the skin while pressing out the air underneath the skin. The air may reappear. If there is no problem, then I would not puncture it, especially if it is the crop.

That could actually be it... I'm new to chicken raising so am still learning all the terminology. The crop is where the food is held before going to the stomach, right? I just checked the chick, and the air pocket isn't there... But when the air pocket is there though, it sometimes shows up above her wing, is that normal? I can try to get a picture next time we see it...

Update:

The "pocket" has slowly been swelling as the day goes on, so it does in fact appear to the it's crop. Thank you!
