So I just had a Spanish White Faced Bantam hatch 3 chicks, and as I was watching her in her nest with the new babies, I noticed that she kept sticking her head under her belly and "scratching" it I guess you could say. I took her off the nest just out of curiosity to see what was bothering her and there I saw SO many fleas and larvae! :sick :barnie I dont know how i didnt see it before. Out of panic i took the nest box and tossed all the infested straw into the lake in my backyard. ( might not have been the smartest idea :idunno) I checked the nest box that my Black Cochin was in with her duck eggs and same thing, just fleas and larvae everywhere! I have never experienced fleas with chickens before. To be honest, I didnt even know that fleas lived up here in Oregon. My dogs have never had fleas since we moved here from Texas. Whats the cheapest and most effective way to get rid of the nasty things?

I put Diatomaceous earth all over to help with fleas. I don't know how well it will work after an infestation I think it's more of a preventative. I never see any bugs in their coop though. My mother said they used sevin dust to get rid of fleas. She said it never bothered her dogs. They would just run off leaving a cloud. Of course this as back when everyone was drinking and smoking, and I assume jitterbuggin, or whatever these old folks did back in the mid 60s.

Sevin dust will definitely get rid of fleas. I wouldn't use it very often considering it is poison. Maybe try to DE first. Clean out coop, I put it under the bedding and mix it into it. Also put some where your birds like to dust bathe. Make sure it's not pool grade DE it's gotta be food grade, I get mine from tractor supply, it's got pictures of animals on the front. It's pretty cheap too. I'd try that first then if it doesn't work go with the sevin, and use DE to keep fleas from getting out of hand.

I have fleas also.... I noticed my Roo acting strange... I thought he was having a seizure... I called my husband outside... He helped calm him down and when he came back inside he had 2 fleas on him. My chicken is black so it's hard to see the fleas... Well I was told by my vet and the guy I got my chickens from... To wash them in Dawn then rinse well and apply Adams flea and tick spray... I will also be cleaning and treating the coop and the run with Permethrin 13.3 which I purchased from my local feed store....this product is safe to use around livestock and people around here put it on their pigs for flea and tick control... I wouldn't recommend putting it on your birds though... Oh and do not spray around ponds if you have them as it is toxic to fish. I will be trying this method today and I will post the results as soon as I can!! Keeping my fingers crossed and I hope it works!!!

Our puppy injured one of our ducks and i gave him a few days to recover and decided to kill and clean him.... I picked 3 fleas off of me and washed a dozen off of him. Fleas will apparently attack chickens, ducks, and anything they can. I frontline all our cats and dogs.... So the fleas our eating the birds now. DE is on my list to rid the pest... I'll report of it works or not. Hopeful it will work

I'm not sure what these little bugs are but they are all over my water. There's also little worms in the water. What are they and how do I get rid of them
