we have a rooster in with our hens, mostly for his looks and to help protect them. I now he does his thing with them, but we collect eggs every day and put them in the frig. I often see the little conception blood spot, but want to make sure i am doing everything right to keep from cracking open a chick.....i somtimes take eggs to work for breakfast and dont want to freak anyone out.....
Like i said.....probably the stupidest question ever......

First of all, it's a common misconception that the blood spot you may occasionally see on a yolk is a sign of fertilization. It's not got anything to do with whether an egg is fertilized or not.

As long as you keep refrigerating eggs right away after being laid, there is no chance that you will crack open an egg and find a chick embryo.

X2 - not a dumb question at all as it is one that many folks ponder before they learn about the entire process of incubation, etc.

Not a dumb question at all!
As stated above, the blood spot isn't related to fertilization. Commercial hens lay eggs with blood spots all the time, they're simply candled and pulled from being sold in cartons.
I've always run at least one rooster in my layer flock, for over 20 years. Collecting eggs every day or every other day, I've never once cracked an egg with a nasty surprise inside. Trust me, that's been a LOT of eggs over the years!

Well i am glad about that. I work in a fire station, and that would definately make brave firemen not so brave....
