Coccidiosis and Sick Babies

Sam, I stick to treatments that are specifically sold for coccidiosis. I don't like taking chances with cocci. If you treat with Corid, the only thing I've found that you can add to it is Tylan. I would be cautious about adding anything else including ACV and garlic.

What I meant was that Tylan is compatible to give with Corid. But with all these meds, I would think twice about adding anything in with it like acv etc.

Corid can also be given with metronidazole, Baytril and Safeguard, though they are usually given orally.

Thanks, guys. My chickies are all feathered out and living outside the house now :)

I have a quick question about Coccidiosis. My littles are 6 weeks old and haven't shown any signs of distress or lack of appetite, but I've noticed a few bloody poops. Could this be early stages? Or something completely different?

Can you post pictures of the poop?

That's how I first noticed it with my chickies. I kept my eye on them and noticed a few of them being lethargic with more bloody poops, so I knew I had to figure out how to treat them. Eventually it happened to most of them to different degrees (contagious), but with a bit of Corid (and higher standards for keeping their brooder & dishes clean) it all cleared up after about a week.

Keep your eye open for further symptoms to know what to do. Good luck!

I haven't noticed anymore symptoms and no more blood in their poo so maybe I was just being a worryer!

Once I even think their behavior is off, standing off, not running for a treat like mush, I start an anticoccidial. Blood in stool only occurs with one out of the 6-9 different cocci that can kill a chick. With a symptomatic young chicken, the one with the symptoms get a full 5-7 days of med even if they look better. Stopping a med when too early leads to being resistant to the med.

I've always treated for the most common ailment at the age of the bird. Most young birds are prone to cocci. I, me , myself , and I like an anticoccidial that also treats for enteritis, such as Sulfadimethoxine. But I have had some serious problems with enteritis at any age.

I am just finishing a 7 day round of corid for my now 24 day old chicks. I had some not eating or drinking so I started making some egg mash for them using 1 fried egg run through food processor till super fine (so they don't just pick it out), some of their chick starter feed, a little old fashioned quaker oats (because it is super absorbant) also run through the processor to create an oat flour texture, and then soaked it in water treated with Corid. I had made egg mash once before when they were still healthy and they went wild. It turned out to be the perfect way to get them eating again and to get the corid water into them. They couldn't pass that up. I served on a pie plate with a plastic covered bowl of water (water to weight it down) set in the center. The bowl in the center helps to keep them from all wading into the plate of mash and pooping in the food. I kept the oats to a minimum because I wanted them to keep their weight up on higher calorie fat and protein foods. But the absorbency of the oats was invaluable. Serve it slightly swimming in the treated water because I guarantee they will be drinking it with the flavor of the mash in it. Also, be prepared to add a bit more corid water as they are eating because it thickens and can handle more added in the process. I'm a newbie but I managed, with help from BYC to save all 20 chicks in my first ever flock. And remember clean clean clean. I fully cleaned the brooder twice a day and washed the water dispenser several times a day as they soiled it. Good Luck!
