I originally purchased chickens for a school project (raising chickens for eggs) but after I brought them home, I realized the project is more for me because they are just so dang cute and sweet. This is my first time raising chicks. I bought them on Saturday for $50 from a girl who bought twice as many as she wanted from my pet chicken. I got 2 easter eggers, 2 andalusians, 2 salmon faverolles, and 2 white marans. Are any of these breeds significant? Rare? Can you guys tell me more about the andalusians, faverolles and marans? Anybody else have those breeds? I posted pictures of all 8 of them on my page.

Hello! And congrats on your flock! All but the Easter Eggers are rare breeds. I have an Easter egger. She just started laying blue eggs a week ago. She's a bit timid. Easter eggers will lay either green, blue, or pink eggs. Color will not change once the first egg is laid.
Marans lay brown eggs. Faverolles lay light brown. Andalusian lay white.

Thank you guys. I ended up posting three new threads - one for each breed because I couldn't seem to find the information I needed in those threads, even though I looked to page 15!

Also, does anybody have any experience in showing and/or breeding chickens from hatcheries? I know they aren't the best quality as far as showing and breeding goes. I would only breed to either replenish my laying flock when they grow older or to better the breed, so I don't want to get a roo if they aren't going to produce good chicks (I wouldn't breed the EE except to replenish my flock).

EE are not broody. I wouldn't breed ee at all. You can find breed info at mypetchicken.com where they were purchased. As for showing, I'd find a breeder online who shows their chickens and purchase one of their chicks. I recommend some research first..especially for breeding. :)

I know that EE aren't broody so if I bred those, I'd incubate the eggs. Is it a good idea to breed the other breeds? I want to breed the Andalusians because they are such a sweet breed.

Oh I beg to differ if an EE will go broody...I've had a couple of them now. The one on the left is an EE..she went twice on me, and boy, she was hard to try and break her from being broody the second time. The one on the right is a pure Ameraucana..Wheaten. Dirty little face. :)

Ae they are cute! Not sure if I really want them to go broody or not...undecided.

I read somewhere that black/white EE chicks are usually boys. I have one but was told she was a girl. Here's a picture of her/him. She's 4 weeks old. Really hoping she's a girl. She's also the biggest of all the chicks....
