I need your opinions, please. A few weeks ago I posted pics of this little guy on the Barred Rock thread. The general consensus was Dominique cockerel due to the rose comb. He's 8 weeks old, and

[/IMG] I think I'm seeing a little beard and muffs! The breeder thought he "might be an Easter Egger". He had EEs, Silkies, and BR in the pen together. Any ideas on the breed and sex of this chick

He looks to me like a Barred Rock, but I'm not that experienced in breeds. You said the breeder had EE, Silkies and BR in the same pen but if he didn't have dominiques, it would be impossible for the chick to be that breed. Is his dad maybe a BR and the mom an EE or the other way around? That would explain the markings and rose comb. It would also explain the beard and muffs too because EE can get those.

This is my EE. She's 4 weeks old but the pic might help you compare the body shapes, etc?

Thank you! I too think he's BR/EE. There is a gorgeous BR rooster in the pen, so it's likely he's the father. I have two hens from the same pen that I got as chicks last summer, and one lays a pretty green egg. Both are barred, but have different combs and body shapes. Doris has feathered feet and is a wonderful broody, so I'm assuming she's BR/Silkie. Dorothy, on the other hand is lean and clean. She looks like a turkey vulture. lol She's not pretty, and she's bossy, but she does lay that nice green egg, so she's a keeper :)

Doris

Another question: is their coloration clean enough for barring, or would it be considered cuckoo? There was a few roos in that same pen, and one was a lovely partridge Silkie, so I'm wondering if that doesn't change things up a bit. Notice the lacing on Doris's breast. Oh the mystery of mutts!

To get an olive egger it is best to cross a chicken with blue egg genes with a chickem that lays a brown egg. If you cross a hen that lays green eggs with a Marans rooster, the resulting pullets could lay a browen egg.

No thanks, I've got those already :) So then Dorothy's mother was an EE that laid blue eggs, and with the BR father I got a green egg, correct? I love reading and I love to learn (obsessively), but holy cow who knew there was so much info to absorb! Thank you both sophiaw00 and enola for your help. This chicken thing is SO addicting
