Brooder Boredom Busters

baby cakes are formulated by a naturalist that is right here on BYC.... (although not too active lately) He designed housing and food for Galliform exhibits for Zoos.

Baby Cakes and Farmers hleper are awesome supplement to their diet. They are full of micronutrients essential fatty acids and protiens.... He also makes a feed which is Pohibitive to buy in large quantities price wise but they suggest to add it to the feed as 5 percent of their ration. Its called Ultra Kibble.

Good nutrition at an early age forms good bones and a robust individual. Exercise and learning hunting techniques is good for them too.

Another good for them treat is Kale poke it through the bars of a suet feeder and once they figure it out watch out.

Make sure they have access to grit though if you are introducing Big Bird feeds...

Should I leave the Baby Cakes in there full time then? Right now, I'm taking out after I get home from school (around 3:30) so they get it for about 7 hours during the day. I'm afraid that they will only eat that and not their starter feed.

The chicks are 4 weeks old, btw.

How about a "Ponderous Pile of Prose Presented to the Poultry Proprieters' Populace?" Sorry, short notice. Teehee

Its 3 days before Christmas and here in PA we have had unseasonably warm temps..today was 63, but there has been rain every morning making the ladies landscape a bit muddy so I decided since they wanted to play outside and enjoy the weather I would dump some bags of sand to mop up the mess and give them something a little more pleaseant to scratch in..but as I poured I formed this small hill and got an idea...i got a plastic bag and added about a cup of scratch ,a cup of raisins, and a couple hundred mealworms from my colonies and shook it all together then went and poured it randomly on the sand hill and covered it all up..it was an official Christmas treasure hunt that kept 14 hens busy for quite some time

Great string of info! This morning my 4 weeks old decided the brooder was the most boring place ever- so much cheeping and flapping and pecking each other. They spent some time outdoors foe the first time this weekend as it finally was warm enough. Clods of dirt and grass clippings from mowing are making much happier girls! More logs and a mirror later today!
