We have a rooster who had spurs....and now he doesn't. They look like little nubbins now, and I have no idea why! He is the beta rooster and a rather nasty tempered fellow. I was seriously considering culling him until I noticed that he no longer has spurs. (I haven't done a thing to them.)

Do roosters shed or lose their spurs ever, naturally?

I imagine if they get too long they can snag and break off. That's most likely what happened. They will slowly grow back.

Our rooster has had the same thing happen. He did have quite long spurs. Glad they are gone!
