I totally understand chicken math now

I've heard about chicken math, and understood it in theory, kind of like understanding the rush of jumping out of an airplane even though you've never done it.

I got my first six chicks a couple of weeks ago. Two Buff Orps, two Rocks, and two labeled Aruacana, even though I'm pretty sure one is an Easter Egger and the other I have no clue, but she's gorgeous. Went to Tractor Supply to price weed eaters for my hubby.

Had to check out the adorable cheeping from the back of the store.

Gold lacewings!!! Little adorable balls of fluff!!

I resisted and went home.

Then I talked to hubby, looked up gold lacewing, which from my searches online appears to be a gold lace Wyandotte? And he says well the coop will hold about 25 or so and we only have six, why don't we get some? More eggs!

So now I'm getting six more chicks this weekend. And thinking about the fact that our coop will still only be about half full. I can get more.

On a side note, can I just put these new babies in with the old as long as I watch them? The old are about four weeks, new maybe a week.

Ha! Yes this is how it starts. Let me be the voice of reason for you. I personally won't/don't eat my chickens. They will live on in my old hens home till they die naturally. For this reason I cannot get too many each year if I want to have a steady stream of eggs. I am limiting my additions each year to 4 since my max is 20 hens. If they were to live to 8 years old I will end up with a couple years of almost no eggs but a bunch of bug eaters. If I were to get 8 each year, then I would be feeding 24 hens for 5 years to eat bugs and not lay hardly any eggs.

Yeah we won't be eating our chickens either. We may get a flock of free ranging guineas next year, and they would end up on our table lol.

But...I went to Tractor Supply since I posted this morning. You know, to see what the other breeds were that they had, so I could research them and maybe get a few different so the six I would get this weekend would not have to all be one breed.

Got them today because chicken math and the other breed was SILKIES. I wanted silkies anyway, so this is a win win. Got two straight run Silkies and four Wyandotte pullets.

And I have a feeling we will just expand the coop in a year or two lol.

Hopeless you chicken people are.

I have the same problem. I live in an area where there are no specific laws regarding poultry and my coop is huge and I have an acre of land. I have 11 hens and 1 rooster now, my coop is a 10x12 shed. I have to work at restraining myself.
