Back in the 80s there was an Urban Legend (myth) being spread by secretaries I knew at IBM that a woman in Texas had taken her daughter to lunch at Neiman Marcus and had their famous chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Supposedly the woman told the waitress she wanted the recipe, and to her surprise the waitress obliged. But when the woman got her monthly bill there was a charge for the recipe on her statement !! I've read of different dollar amounts for that charge, but the myth says the woman figured she'd get even with Neiman Marcus by passing the recipe along. This is the old recipe I remember, though now Neiman Marcus claims this never happened and supplied an online version of "their recipe" to refute the legend. The old one I remember uses "blended oats" oatmeal run thru a blender into a fine powder (the "official recpie" posted by Neiman Marcus does not have the blended oats). It really adds a nice touch to the cookies... Try this !!

Mis en Place:
(Recipe may be halved):

1 cup butter
1 cup shortening

4 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups brown sugar
5 cups blended oatmeal (measure oatmeal and blend in blender to a fine powder)
24 oz. chocolate chips
1 tsp. salt
1 8 oz. Hershey bar (grated)
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
2 tsp. vanilla

Preparation:
Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet..Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies.. Have Fun!!!
