Ameracauna Question

I've been reading up a bit about Ameraucana vs Easter Eggers and have come to a point of confusion (for me). If a male and female Ameraucana of two different colors hatched chicks, would those chicks be considered EEs? Or would those chicks fit the mold for the coloring of one or other of the parent birds? If the chicks aren't a standard color are they still considered true Ameraucana? I am likely showing my ignorance here but I am truly curious to learn more and would love any help you can provide. Thanks.

If a male and female of two different color varieties breed, both the Ameraucana Breeders Club and the APA considers them to be Easter Eggers as they will not conform to the required Ameraucana color standards. True Ameraucanas have some of the toughest standards of any breed.

I recently bought eggs from an Ameraucana "breeder." He assured me that all of his birds were true Ameraucanas but they were many different colors (i.e. no way to know which colored hens were breeding with his rooster) and laid blue, green and pink eggs.

I posted a pic of my chicks above. Do you think either of them are breed standard coloring? I was thinking the light one may be a silver but the darker one looks like an EE. Any thoughts?

Any bird that lays green and pink eggs is not a true Ameraucana as the standard calls for only blue eggs. Your two chicks are both EEs. The light one is in shadow but its legs appear to the the greenish tint common to many EEs rather than the slate blue legs called for by Ameraucana standards.

The more I learn, the more I can see that the guy I bought eggs from was either uninformed or being dishonest.



This is a picture of the light chick immediately after hatching. It's feet are still this color (which is clearly not slate blue).

If you want true Ameraucana, you need to find a breeder that breeds to the breed standard. Not someone who lets one rooster breed everything in the flock. If you want a specific breed, you need to know the standard for that breed. That way, you don't end up pay for something that's not what you thought it was.
