What about the bells? Y'know, the bells that are birdseed and you can make them yourself with some sort of honey mix. I remember we did that in elementary school... I'll have to do research.

Wait, is honey ok?

Perhaps can make some sort of binding of Peanut Butter... Hmmm.

Edit:

I too have thought of giving my flock wild bird blocks. I personally didn't know, so I just didn't. Thanks for asking!

Here’s a few of my findings… I may have to mix some of these up for Christmas gifts!!!. J

(BTW
: no, I don't know what the "syrup" is. LOL. I know, real specific, eh?)l

YOU WILL NEED:
Birdseed
Syrup
Wax Paper or Non-Stick Spray
Microwave proof containers.
Large bowl and a spoon for mixing.

MIX IT UP!
That’s it! Mix with enough syrup to barely coat your birdseed. I put my bird mix into a large bowl and slowly add the syrup. After you’ve mixed it thoroughly, pack it very tightly into your microwave container that you’ve either sprayed with non-stick spray, or lined with wax paper. Wax paper tends to work best for me. I also use wax paper to press it tightly into the container before cooking. If you plan to hang up your bell/block you can insert hangers into them right after they come out of the oven. The seed will tighten around your hanger as it cools. Use any ‘bird safe’ object as a hanger.

BAKE IT UP!
Bake on high, checking every 2-3 minutes. Watch closely to avoid scorching. You’ll know that the ‘bell or block’ is finished when it’s glossy and all the seeds have bonded together. Thoroughly cool before emptying. Place bird bells/blocks on feeder. Be sure to also provide plenty of water for all your wild critters.

It’s
Equilibrium’s recipe.

Lastly, I looked at a few of these recipes, and for the most part, liked them.

http://www.birdsnways.com/birds/rtreats.htm

However, I do not recommend the Bird Candy recipe (leaving it in the sun with an ingredient of a raw egg white sounds like a problem waiting to happen…) and I also would substitute any and all “cereals” with layer crumble, Oatmeal, or other grains. No need for Cheerios, which has vitamins that are likely too high for the birds.

I give my rooster suet balls I buy at Lowe's Home improvement as treats. They are made for bluebirds but he looks for the bag and begs for them at our back door. they are about the size of a peanut m&m.

I got a big bag of beef scrap fat from the butcher for free. I tossed it into the crock pot and cooked it a long long time. The fat melted and the moisture evaporated, leaving liquid and big chunks of what looked like pork rinds. So I used a slotted spoon to pull out the crispy protein bits, crunched them up and put some extra chick food into it to soak up the grease, stirred it all together, and tossed it to some very happy chickens. Then I mixed a ton of scratch with the liquid fat and poured into a mold to make homemade suet cakes.

I thought that was pork... in any case, the chickens gobbled it up, whatever you call them. I'll be sure to do it again, you can't beat free!!! I'm down to the last few weeks to fatten these fellers up before their Big Day!!
