whats your thoughts on candling eggs often.

ya well i was fine cause i know i read on here a few months ago that candling often was fine then recently im reading alot of people saying to only candle like once or twice. i find it really hard for me to not candle i want to make sure there alive and progressing like they should lol

I'm on my 3rd clutch (small clutches of 6-9 eggs) and have only had one egg hatch (I think the eggs were not fertilized) I have 9 eggs now and 3 have embryo's growing inside! I candled on day 3 just for the fun of it because I didn't think anything would be going on (long story but the eggs were sorta an experiment). Now that I know they are in there I couldn't help myself and had to candle them again last night :/ I'm getting really great pictures of the development and I kind of want to take pictures daily so I can make my own growth chart diagram but I don't want to hurt the babes. I make sure to wash my hands well, handle very gently and only have them out long enough to take a couple of pictures and then its back in the incubator in the same position as they started. I also try not to turn them to much while candling just so I don't shake anything up in there! lol This is all fairly new to me so I like to read a lot of people opinion and then decide what I think will work best for me :) If it doesn't work then I adjust and try again. Here are my 3 baking babies! lol

Me too....lol but as long as what I am doing is working for me, I don't worry about what others say, and I have perfectly good hatches, like I said, the last was 92%, and I candle at least a few eggs every night. 2 out of the 3 eggs that did not make it were badly shrink wrapped from an extreme air cell growth between day 18 and day 20 (nothing to do with candling) and the other never turned. I ended up with 33 out of 36 hatchers.

I am doing the same thing. I have 20 eggs in I set Sunday afternoon and I have 6 set aside strictly for every night candling. I need candling pics for my blog to show growth progression, and as a test to see what if any difference there is to the eggs that are candled every night and the ones only candled on days 7/14/18.

These are my pics from day3, 4 and today after I completed day 5. (I want to get a better pic tonight for my day 5 when it's darker and I can get a better pic.

I set my eggs late Sunday (5/17/15) too! I will more then likely candle again tonight after my kids are in bed! lol Your eggs look great! All my pictures were edited to enhance the view. All I did was max out contrast and bring up the light so you can see it better!

I think the biggest issue with frequent candling is the transferrence of oils and bacteria from your hands to the eggs. i'm also an obsessive candler. But, I often candle right in the incubator without picking the eggs up. My last hatch, 22 of 23 eggs that went into lock down hatched, so I don't think my obsession hurt them that much!

This was a great thread. I've also read about how you shouldn't candle so much. But I LOVE candling! My thoughts are, as long as I wash my hands really good before, and since I'm hand turning 3xday, whats the harm with doing a little candling? Then I've read that the light stresses the embryo. Or maybe it excites the embryo, therefore it exercises more & gets strengthened...I'm really just joking with the last part but we don't really know. I'm looking forward to finding out the results of Amy's test!! It makes me so happy to see those little guys dancing in their shell!
