When to start grit?

I guess once my snow is gone I will give them a chunk of sod also. How high should I put the perch? I was just going to make one out of some wood I have laying around?

How old are they again? I start with one sitting nearly on the brooder floor from day one and move it up in height as they get stronger and want to practice getting up and down. With the configuration of my brooder I end up maxing out at about 6 inches off the floor by about 3 weeks.

I won't be getting them for a month yet but I want to be ready. I will start with a 2x2" on the ground then will slowly start making it higher. My side walls are 24"

Hmm mine have been on chick grit from day 1. They are in the brooder with pine shavings. I have been offering the grit free feed in a dish next to the feeder, they all go to it every now and then. I have 4 one week old chicks and 5 one day old chicks.... Is this too much grit? They are on medicated starter... The feed store sent me home with chick grit so I just figured they should have it...

I have to ration my little fellas grit because they treat it like a food group. A small handful daily for nine chicks seems to be plenty. They eat as much as I put out.

Thanks for the advice everyone...very helpful!  When I start my chicks on grit, what is the best way to administer it?  Just sprinkle some in their food?
I wouldn't sprinkle in the food as you want the feed to be pure feed and the grit like a treat-optional. I'd put little in your hand to start then just little in the box so they start pecking at it. I also heard nothing but starter chick feed for 2 weeks then start if you want to give then little clumps of grass to see what they do (guess it's pretty funny to see them try). When you do this then you start grit.
Mind you, my words are from what I hear from seasoned chick owners experiences as we are awaiting our first flock.
