1st Hatch with Hova Bator 1588

I put some eggs in the bator on May 2nd.

I had one over achiever decide to hatch out yesterday morning.

Last night had another pipping.

I get up this morning and the one that was pipping last night hatched, along with another chick.

I have several more eggs pipping this morning.

My question is, the first chick that hatched is now 24 hours old. Do I remove him and put him in the brooder by himself or wait another 12-24 hours till the other ones are dry and transfer them all together?

I don't want over achiever chick to be in the hatcher for too long and not eat or drink anything.

I take mine out when they are dry or close to it.just do it quick so you don't drop humidity too much

As long as the humidityis up in the bator (higher than 65%) opening shouldn't be much of an issue if you don't hold it open and you have a wet sponge or paper towel nearby, (some use a waster mister) to add to the bator if the humidity drops to bring it back up. I remove my chicks from the bator to the brooder as they are hatching and start becoming active. I used to wait until they were partially dry before moving, but then I had a couple get hurt on my fan so now as soon as they are moving around they are pulled out. Just make sure that your brooder is heated at one end between 95-100F. I agree with the concept they should be out where food and water is available to them, (though the philosophy is that they can go up to 3 days w/o it.)

Thanks. I am going to transfer the older chicks this afternoon. Got my home-made brooder ready to go. Heat lamp going with a thermometer in there to make sure it is warm enough. Washed out the chick feeder/waterer and fresh shavings down.

Ready to go. Now just the rest of the eggs to hurry up and hatch.

Here is my home made brooder. Just a Rubbermaid tote with the lid cutaway and chicken wire zip tied to it.

Got my feeder and waterer setup. My light is only keeping the temp around 88.5. I tried a heat bulb, but it heated it up to 108. I figured a little cool is better than too hot.

Nice looking brooder. 88 is a little low for newly hatched chicks. If you put the heat bulb back in and can raise the light away from the tote so it is up higher you should be able to find a good range. They'll let you know though if they are too cold. If they are all huddled together on top of each other under the light and still not happy, you know they need more heat. Just make sure that only one end is warmed by the light so they can move in and out under it to adjust for what they need.

Well, 72+ hours later and my hatch is done.

The first chick hatched out at 6:45am Friday morning and I had to help the last chick out of his egg at 5:00pm this afternoon.

In all, 19 chick hatched out of 30 eggs that went to lockdown.

I wouldn't have expected such a long interval between my first chick hatching and my last chick hatching.
