June 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

here are some of our newest babies! the first is my Sugar and her 5 chicks (3 silkie mix and 2 that look like black orps, but I dont have any of those grown up.. so we shall see!)

the bottom is my 2nd cooler-bator hatch! Most are shipped eggs from Cassie @Slackwater. I had 8 of 12 blrw and 3 of 6 BBSO hatch!! the rest are from my own, 3 jubilee orps and 3 mutts! a couple of these babies will be going to their new home shortly.

I wish I could keep them all!! but they are my dads, so... at least I get visitation rights!

I checked on Mrs. Broody this morning and she's up to three chicks, (including the EE, yay!). Yesterday we buried the one egg that died while zipping, and she now has three left. None of those three have pipped but she could have been on that nest for four or more days while other hens laid eggs on her so, I'm going to wait before removing them. Grats to all of you and your new chicks.

I can't wait to get pictures of all my black beauties and share them. I wish I knew which one was from the EE mother, but oh well. At least I finally got one of hers to hatch.

Sounds like everyone is doing very well with their hatches!! Cute pics above!

I have only done one broody hatch and I pulled the hatched shell myself.

More to put in lockdown...Woot woot! Two peafowl out!

Random question-What do the hens do with the egg shells after they hatch?
No idea. I removed the shells from mine afterwards to see which ones were out. My guess is they either eat them or ignore them.

Mrs. Broody has taken her chicks on a walk outside of the broody house already. They're so stinking cute. I just hope she returns to the other eggs in time to finish the hatch.

Well I guess what I'm wondering is will they scoot the shells away out of the nest after the chicks hatch? I'm close to hatch day and just wondering how I will know when they hatch :)

We're thinking of putting the hens and babies in a separate area inside the main coop for a couple weeks?? Mainly for protection I guess? Maybe it's not even necessary...

I have heard a lot of people do that...so they stay close and familiar. I am working with my first broody myself...
