Hi, my Rhode Island Red is very sick. She seems to just stand in the same spot all day and the feathers around her vent are covered in poo. I've had 2 other Rhode Island reds that have died over the last few months from the exact same symptoms so could it be something contagious? I would really appreciate an answer soon, thanks!

Hi Peter16, so sorry about your losses and that I don't have an answer to help.

I do suggest you post this issue under emergencies and hopefully someone can give you some suggestions. You should isolate the ill RIR in a warm, comfortable place you can keep an eye on her, standing in one place is a sign of serious illness. And if this is contagious, best to avoid further contact til you get an answer.

Hope you can find a diagnosis and that it is treatable.

No they haven't been wormed, however after some research she seems to have the symptoms of being egg bound. Could this cause death within a few days?

Yes, but it would be odd to see several in the flock have this problem

To rule out egg bound do an internal digital exam with a gloved finger - see the learning center article on egg binding and it describes how to do this. If no egg felt at about one inch, then look for another diagnosis.

If she was my hen I would start by working her with Safeguard or Valbazen. Do you know how much she weighs?
I don't know exactly how much she weighs but I picked her up today and she was quite light

Her symptoms sound like she has worms, not egg bound or peritonitis.

A heavy worm infestation can and will cause a hen to just waste away. When a flock is infested with worms, one of the most common signs a flock owner will see is chickens dropping dead "for no apparent reason".
