Pipd's Peeps!

They're here! I got almost three dozen!
Will be setting on Wednesday when I move the ones hatching into lockdown.

Or I could just set them in the new incubator?

6 silkie eggs from stock I bought from a show breeder. The ones I bought have still have flaws, but at least they are proper SOP colors and for the most part have a tad better conformation than my first group of silkies. It's a black over blacks and splashes, so I'm super curious to see what shade blue comes out!!!

The cockerel is very sweet, he showed them the oyster shell right away and got them all to try it. They surprised me with an egg so I hurried and added a little oyster shell dish, and he went right over and made a big fuss about it and it totally worked. It was so cute. What he lacks toward the SOP he makes up for with perfect behavior. I have another cockerel from the same breeder who will not get a chance to provide me with offspring, he is not a nice boy.

Oh, that should be interesting! :pop The eggs from Buck's pen are similarly from a Splash male over Black females, so it'll be interesting to see the shades of Blue that come from that. I primarily chose to go that route because I'm suspicious of some of those girls being dark Blue, so if any chicks hatch out Splash instead of just Blue, then I'll both know that that is the case and be able to cull out dark blue genes that way by not keeping any resulting Splash offspring. :yesss:

Aww! 🥰 Yeah, Buck is probably not what I'd categorize as sweet, he's a bit brash if anything, but he does make sure the girls know any time there's a goodie in the pen, even if it's just some pellets that spilled out of their feeder. 🤭 The important part to me is that he's not overly rough with them, nor is he aggressive toward me (though he has had a couple moments where I wondered if he was going to be!).

If the new incubator is running steadily and has been checked with a calibrated thermometer to make sure it's reading the right temp, then I'd set them ASAP, personally! Remember that eggs can start losing viability after 7-10 days if not incubated. They've been in the mail for a few days and sitting at the PO over the weekend, so you don't want to wait too much longer on them!

Regardless, looking forward to seeing what hatches from them! :pop

Y'all, I've got BROODIES! :th

Not pictured is Amaretto, who's been sitting in the broody buster for a week now, and Gwenyth, who loves to go semi-broody for months on end so that I can't collect eggs from her to hatch. :barnie

I'm actually a bit tempted to let some of the Cochins sit on eggs for me, especially considering how poor fertility was in my batch from Wyatt's pen, but of course space is an issue. Two of those pictured are not even meant for keeps, but I've been dragging my feet on getting a sales post put together for them and all the cockerels I still have from last year's hatches that are occupying the section of the coop that I'd use to let broodies raise chicks... All I know is that Amaretto was not a good broody, so she's not going to be trusted with eggs again, and if I don't bust Gwenyth as soon as possible then I likely won't be able to hatch from her this year. :barnie

Oof, yeah, probably safer to wait for the incubator you know is running properly, then. :fl
Yeah after my test hatching for Halloween in the 56ex I'm pretty sure on settings.

The new one is running right now but I'm going to be moving the eggs that are hatching this weekend to the NR360. That might happen tonight instead of tomorrow so I can get the rosecombs in asap.

Lol, I should have gotten pictures this morning as Dr. Girlfriend (gold Sebrite that is brooding in the garage tool chest) was in with the chicks in the brooder showing them food. When I came through the door she puffed up and jumped on the side if the brooder to come at me! She did finally realize who I was and started trying to me to come eat with them too. 🤣

Aww, she sounds adorable!! :love That's sweet that she wanted to make sure you were fed, too! 🤭

When my Sebrights would go broody and puff up like that, they always reminded me of strutting turkeys with their big, fanned tails and wings dragging on the ground. Crazy little bitties! Now I just have angry fuzzball broodies 🤣
